What Is an Airline Schedule Change?

An airline schedule change occurs when an airline modifies the departure time, arrival time, aircraft, or routing of your booked flight. Minor changes (15 minutes or less) are common and typically don’t entitle you to any special options. Significant changes, however, trigger important passenger rights.

Minor Schedule Change

Typically 15–60 min departure shift. Usually no entitlement to refund or free change, though policies vary by airline.

Significant Schedule Change

60–240+ min shift, different routing, or aircraft downgrade. Typically entitles you to a free rebooking or refund.

Major Change / Cancellation

Same-day cancellation or very large schedule change. Under DOT rules, you’re entitled to a full cash refund.
