How to Change Your Delta Airlines Flight After Booking
Changing a flight after booking can feel like a stressful ordeal, but Delta Air Lines has designed its policies to offer significant flexibility for most travelers. Whether your plans have shifted due to a last-minute conflict or a change of heart, you can typically modify your itinerary online without much hassle.
The exact process, potential costs, and rules depend heavily on your specific ticket type and where your journey originates.
The 24-Hour Risk-Free Window
If you booked your ticket directly through Delta and it has been less than 24 hours since the purchase, you can change or cancel your flight for any reason completely free of charge. You will receive a full refund to your original form of payment, with no change fees or penalties applied.
Step-by-Step: How to Change Your Flight Online
For changes made outside of the 24-hour window, you can easily modify your reservation through Delta’s self-service portal.
- Locate your trip: Navigate to the My Trips section on Delta.com or open the Fly Delta mobile app. Log into your SkyMiles account, or enter your confirmation number, ticket number, or credit card details to pull up your reservation.
- Select the flight to modify: Once your trip details load, look for the option labeled “Change or Add Flights” and click on it to begin the modification process.
- Choose your new flights: Browse the available flights for your desired dates. Select the new departure or arrival times that better suit your schedule.
- Review fare differences and pay: The system will automatically calculate any difference in fare. If the new flight is more expensive, you will be prompted to pay the difference. If it is cheaper, the remaining value will typically be issued as a Delta eCredit. Confirm your choices and finalize the checkout.
Understanding the Fees and Rules
Delta has eliminated change fees for many tickets, but your financial responsibility depends on your fare class and origin:
Change these flights without paying a change fee. If the new flight costs more, you only pay the fare difference.
For Main Cabin and above originating in the US/Canada, change fees are permanently $0. Only pay the fare difference.
Highly restrictive. Generally cannot be changed. Only partial eCredits are issued after a steep cancellation fee deduction.
For flights originating outside the U.S. and Canada, change fees may still apply based on fare rules.
Same-Day Flight Changes
If your plans change on the actual day of travel, Delta offers a Same-Day Change policy, which allows you to switch to an earlier or later flight on the same calendar day. This option becomes available within 24 hours of your original departure time.
- Same-Day Confirmed: If your originally purchased fare class has an available seat, you can secure it. Free for Medallion members and refundable ticket holders; $75 USD for other travelers.
- Same-Day Standby: If a confirmed seat isn’t available, you can choose to standby for an earlier flight at no additional cost.
